I am happy to report that the second Florida Linux Show was an outstanding success! The show was quite a gathering of dedicated and enthusiastic Open Source professionals. Despite being ill, I attended as many great presentations and even gave one myself. My presentation on FOSS Games and the state of Linux gaming went well save for the faulty ever flickering projector. Lets call it a “feature.”=P Once again I announced my community efforts to raise awareness on the many wonderful things happening in Open Source gaming with my new site opengamingnow.com. The general consensus among all the presenters and attendees was resoundingly positive.

Thanks to the whole Florida Linux Team, Ubuntu Florida LoCo, Ubuntu Podcast, and the Qimo project for their great company. Look for up-and-coming coverage of the Qimo project at opengamingnow.com I look forward to seeing you all next year at the Florida Linux Show!

I would like to thank the whole SCALE team for their tireless work on producing such an outstanding FOSS community event. The presentations were all stellar and much was garnered from the ensuing reflection. At SCALE, I am impressed with the depth and breath of insight, intelligence and diverse brilliance of our community. Bravo SCALE!

For those that know me or have attended any of my recent presentations – you are aware of my life long fascination with video games. One of my favorites which I have included in several presentations is looking for new contributors to join its growing community. Nexuiz is a fast-paced, futuristic FPS Open Source (First Person Shooter) that is my definition of fun. If you loved Quake and Unreal series, then Nexuiz will be right up your alley. The project seeks:

Engine developers

QuakeC developers

Animators/3D player animations

Skin modeler

Concept artist

If you want to be involved in a cool Open Source project, Nexuiz is for you! For those of you who aren’t familiar with the project go check it out at http://www.alientrap.org/nexuiz/ and download it for FREE. If you like the game, I would encourage you to show your support by donating.

Often over these last few years I have been getting into a consistent conversation with friends within the Free/Open Source movement regarding its trajectory. What does the future hold for FOSS (Free and Open Source Software)? Will become the dominant model for the software industry or languish?

Personally I think FOSS is a superior development model that consistently yields high quality software. Nearly every day we hears news about once closed companies/technologies moving more toward this successful open model. Even one of the once largest detractors, Microsoft – is an Open Source company now. =P Existing FOSS companies and communities have always understood their own world but not always been the best at bringing others on board. Even with all successes of FOSS has many issues to overcome such as building a sustainable business model, IP (Intellectual Property) issues, confronting overblown FUD, successful marketing, etc. Those same problems sometimes apply to many community driven projects. Its my personal hope as an Administrator/User/Advocate/Entrepreneur to see FOSS grow but I don’t think it will ever be the only option. It will exist along side many shades of open and closed. Is it not true that the competition will create innovation? Arguably there would be no internet without FOSS. It has been critical to the evolution of so much of what we take for granted in todays internet world. The future will bring much more amazing innovation from the tremendous power of this well source that is FOSS.
